Reflection for ES1102

What have i learned so far?

As English is always my weakness, I had put in extra effort during the past weeks trying to improve on it. I had benefited a lot from the lesson conducted during the past few weeks. During this short period of time in class, i had learned the important of sentence structure, verb tenses, critical thinking and essay writing.

Through the presentation given by my classmates on sentence structure, i was able to identify incomplete sentences, agreement on subject and verb and commas splice. These had helped me to correct my mistakes during essay writing, such as summary, reader response and problem solution essay.

Through the presentation we had to give our classmates on verb tenses, i had managed to understand how it work and realized the importance of it. I became more careful when i was writing the essay, as i knew that a difference in tense would mean a different thing.

After the critical thinking lesson, i was able to identify the main point behind for writer's article or sentences. And instead of copying word for work, i was able to put them in my words. In addition i had learned how to write a good essay with the use of conjunctions to link the points together, instead of just write a whole chunk of points that do not seems to connect.  


What have improved on in term of content, language and structure of academic writing?

During this period, i have learned to write the important point instead of writing non essential point.
In addition, i have learned to use supporting evident and proper citation to improve on my content.
I was able to spot my grammar and tenses mistake, and was able to rectifier it before I summit the assignment. I have also taught the proper structure of academic writing for different essay. Hence i was able to present my idea clearly in the essay.

What would i like to learn from Week 10 -12?

I would like to learn more on the proper use of tenses. As I was still confused when I was writing my problem solution essay. I was not very sure about what tense to use when i wrote about the problem. As the event had happened, however some of the consequences still remain true.

What are my weakness that i need to work on?

My weakness will be my language, as i am still unsure which tenses i need to apply during different situation. And also i have to improve my vocabulary as well,


Comment on the feedback on the summary and reader response
For my summary i was able to understand all the feedback and make necessary changes to it.
However i did not make enough changes to link the points together using words like in addition and
however.

For my reader response i was able to correctly make all the changes except for one, it was a careless mistake.

I rated my reader response as B for the content, organisation and language as i felt that there are room for improvement.  I was quite accurate on the grade.

Is audio and written feedback is a good way to get feedback

Yes, both audio and written feedback is a good way to get feedback, especially audio as it is more detailed compare to written feedback.

Are audio and written feedback useful in other course?

Yes i believe that audio and written feedback are useful in other courses as well

English Learning Journey

My English learning journey have always been a slow and painfully journey. Born and raise in a chinese speaking family. Unlike other's parents, my parents did not read bed time story, as such i did not get a lot of contact with this language. Since young English have been an alien language which I fear of. 

In my school days, my result for my English subject have always been last in my class. Resulting a drop in interest in the subject. My result for my O's Level allows me to go to a neighbor Junior College. However I have chose to go to a Polytechnic thinking that i will never take any English subject anymore. 

Thinking that English wasn't that important, I did not put in much effort in studying it. Everything changes after i got a placing in National University of Singapore. During my National Service I would read newspapers or magazine whenever I am free. Getting a band 2 for my QET is kind of a bitter sweet, knowing that it will be another chance for me to improve my English, hoping that i can finally speak and read proper English.
